Anniversary poem

i had every reason to trust you

(you, me;

not so much).

yet.

i could make a joke here about hormones,

but i believe it was the universe sliding into place.

this is anniversary of the day we took it public and solemn,

but we said yes to each other when we were just kids

and there was no one else around.

when people tell me marriage is hard

i nod (no one likes a braggart)

but i have only known

a single path, through sun and shade trees,

clearly marked

you.
