No Offense

Last night, my grandson Henry projectiled his sturdy two-year-old body into my arms, triggering the grandmotherly impulse to hug him way too long and way too tight.  “Hen,” I told him, “I love you so much.”

“I love you, Nana.” Pulling back and gazing directly into my eyes, he said, “Now go away.”

My daughter (his mom) was there, and we couldn’t stop laughing, because toddlers speak their minds in quicksilver moments, so honesty lands like a tickle monster.
